Gujarat has long been considered as one of the most progressive states of India, be it on the industrial front or the agricultural front. Imbued with a proactive, visionary outlook, its government has catalyzed development in various spheres the collective effort has, thus, propelled the state towards progress.
Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation (GAIC), which promotes agricultural activities at the ground level and fosters the development of agro industries in the state, is a manifest example of the forward-looking policies of the state. Set up in 1969 under the Companies Act, 1956, GAIC acts as a facilitator and nodal agency for implementation of various scheme of Government of Gujarat and Government of India
The present-day globalized agricultural environment necessitates a holistic approach to farming and all related activities. Moreover, strengthening of the forward and backward linkages between agriculture and industry has also become a prerequisite. This is where GAIC steps in. It plays an important role in increasing competitiveness by encouraging farmers to adopt an integrated approach to agriculture and work towards better returns from the existing set-up. |

| The basic objectives of GAIC are: |

To accelerate demand-based production of agro-products and develop agro industries in the new global agricultural environment |

To enhance the productivity of crops in a sustainable manner and give Gujarat a competitive edge through an integrated approach to agriculture |

To increase the levels of return to farmers by promoting value additions |

To reduce wastage of agro products and increase the overall income of farmers |

To establish a significant position for Gujarat in the global market by creating backward and forward linkages between agriculture and industry. |

In order to achieve these objectives, GAIC has a state-wide network reaching the remotest corners, which streamlines the timely supply of agricultural inputs, equipment and services to farmers at reasonable rates.
But that is not all. GAIC's vision goes beyond the obvious. GAIC is all about empowering the farmers. Towards this end, the organization endeavors to bring various stake holders together to find ways and means for adoption of state-of-the-art crop management practices. It also aims at reducing wastage of agricultural produce, value-adding to the basic produce, exploration of export opportunities and going in for contract farming. Besides, energy conservation and promotion of low cost biogas energy is also high on the agenda of GAIC. The ultimate objective is the improvement of the quality of life in rural areas. |

| History of GAIC |

| GAIC commenced its operations immediately on its incorporation and achieved turnover of Rs. 30.00 Lacs in the year 1969-70, which subsequently crossed Rs.20,000.00 Lacs mark and went up over Rs. 21,000.00 Lacs. A two-pronged strategy was adopted by GAIC at that time: First to provide much needed farm machineries, equipments and other agricultural inputs. Secondly to set up agricultural processing and storage units - to fill the gap between production and demand that existed at that time. Overall it consists of fruits & vegetables processing units, cold storages, oil extraction and refinery units, pesticides formulation units and so on. It had also supported setting up of high tech units in joint sector. |
